Without Them

A Tribute to Someone Special

Donald Brown

Whether it was debate, extemp., original oratory, or any forensic category, Donald Brown was the most superb teacher and provided the most constructive encouragement a student could have. We flourished under his tutelage . . . we learned and we performed.

He supported us wholeheartedly -- the man couldn't have had any time to call his own -- weekends were most frequently taken up with speech meets, and he was usually there going from event to event giving advice, offering help, and making the parents/chaperones feel appreciated.

I'm sure we didn't tell him then how much we appreciated him . . . I certainly think he deserves a place in our "Without Them" section.

Thanks for giving me the chance to say a tiny "Thank You."

I second Mary Ann Cannon's recommendation that Donald Brown be included in the list of those whom we shouldn't forget. He was a quiet man who lived out the phrase "a gentleman and a scholar." He had a large influence on my life as well.

I third the recommendation that Donald Brown be included in the list. He made a special impact on my life. He was my grandfather's roommate in college.  My grandfather graduated with honors from IU's Law School, but he died when my dad was about 11 or 12 years old.  So, I never knew my grandfather or much about him. Mr. Brown used to tell stories to the class and to me about my grandfather.  He was also an excellent algebra instructor.

I do want to second the motion for Donald Brown to be included on our Den Web page. He was an important teacher for many of us. Like coaches and dear Mr. Brugger,  Mr. Brown spent hours after school and on "free periods" coaching us for speech and dramatic competitions.  He drove students all over northern Indiana on week-ends to "speech meets." He formed and sponsored the first Thespian Society Chapter at EHS in 1960. He gets my vote!
