John H. Hinds was
born on April 1, 1911 in Hobbs,
Indiana. He attended Burket Elementary School in Tipton for the first eight
years of his school career. He graduated from Windfall High School in 1929.
After graduation he attended Indiana State Teacher's College, Ball State
University, and Purdue University. After graduating from college he taught
Industrial Arts at Windfall High School from 1935 to 1939. For the next
13 years he taught Industrial Arts at Alexandria High School. Finally in
1952, he came to Elwood where
he would serve in the school system for the next 25 years.
He started out as the Coordinator of Diversified Cooperative Education
and moved on to being the Director of Practical Arts Education, Director
of Curriculum, Director of Adult Education, and finally the Assistant Superintendent
for the Elwood Community School Corporation.
John
Hinds held prominent positions in many organizations.
He was president of the IIEA in 1956, president of the Indiana Vocational
and Practical Arts Association in 1961, state president of the Indiana
Council of Local Administrators of Vocational and Practical Arts Education
in 1964, and was the trustee of the Indiana Vocational and Technical College
from 1969 to 1975.
In 1963 he was on the "Roll of Honor"
in the Indiana State Teacher's Association, in "Who's
Who Midwest," and in "Who's
Who Among American Educators." He also held
the Laureate Citation
from Epsilon Phi Tau in 1954.
In 1977, John H. Hinds
brought his career to an end. He retired from the Elwood Community School
Corporation after 42 years of service. In 1992, at the age of 81, John
Hinds passed away.
The John H. Hinds Career Center is a result of his vision and hard work.
