Sleds
I went driving through the streets of Elwood today, looking for signs of the kind of fun we used to have when we were kids. After all, there was a big snow and Christmas and a long winter recess from school. There should be signs of lots of snow time activity.
When we were kids, this kind of snow would have brought every kid in the neighborhood outside, bundled to the nose with woolen scarves, dragging their sleds, looking for a hill or empty field to slid through. Near my house, there was a hump bridge on North C street that begged to be slid down! Julie, do you remember that bridge?
Tony lived in the south side and his favorite sledding spots were Tin Can Alley and a hill and pasture just south of Sheridan street. The kids from the area used to run their sleds down that hill, all the way to the creek. What fun was had by everyone.
But today, driving around the streets of Elwood, we couldn't find any sled tracks, no drag tracks from saucers or those roll-up plastic sheets. We didn't see any Snow Angels or snow forts. The only thing that hinted that there were children in the houses were the few melting snowmen, sitting in front and side yards.
Guess Nintendo and Play Station have a greater appeal than the thrill of whooshing down the hill, with snow in your face and the sound of other kids laughter in your ears.
Too bad.

A smile crosses My face...
The feeling of joy
A love so sweet
He thinks of me
His laughter fills
It washes over
