This past month Elwood has really been showing her pride in many ways. You would be surprised at the many yellow ribbons throughout the whole town. And flags are still flying.
The biggest thing that has been in the works has been the Memorial Day Parade.
Again, it seemed to be a big winner, and the day was absolutely perfect for a
parade. There were more entrants this year than last year, and I could not
believe the number of people along the streets.
The
Memorial Service at the library was exactly what I feel a Memorial Service
should be . . . moving and uplifting at the same time. My only regret is that
there was a much smaller crowd at the service than were sitting along the
streets. It just goes to show that so many people seem to have forgotten what
Memorial Day is all about. In my opinion, going for the 3 day holidays seems to
have taken the meaning of these special days away. When they read the roster for
all of those lost in the declared wars of this country, it came to over
1,200,000 who gave their lives for our freedoms. So,
I guess if some do not want to honor these men who gave the ultimate sacrifice,
they have been given the right by those who paid the extreme price. Terri
Austin, our state representative was keynote speaker at the Memorial Service and
she certainly did a fine job. She made her hometown very proud of her.
And the school bands Elwood has such a good marching band, it is simply unreal. Madison Grant sent their jazz band. And, of course, there was the first of the Alumni Band Members. They were able to get a CD made from an old tape of Mr. Brugger's Georgia Campground. I don't think any of his marching bands were ever in any parade without playing it.
Eric
Grogan a sophomore at Elwood High School played Taps for us and did an extremely
good job. I am sure he must have felt so proud.
This
past month I have been so busy working with the parade committee that I have not
noticed anything of interest happening around here. I do know they are ready to
start the work on North Anderson Street . . . but, since that will take about 2
years or so to get finished, I will not bore you with monthly announcements on
how the work is going. That is if nothing really exciting comes up such as they
have torn up the street or something similar to that statement.
I
hope that all of you had an extremely good Memorial Day weekend. I also hope
that each one of you take a few minutes to remember and honor the 1,200,000 who
gave us our freedoms and keep them for us. This country has never gone to war to
occupy territory, only to keep freedoms bells ringing. There also have been
approximately 180 just from Madison County. I am sorry I did not get the exact
number, but by that time I was hearing familiar names and just did not remember
the exact number . . . only that it was too many.
May
God bless all of you and may God bless the United States of America.
