Your Old Home Town

It is summer time here in Your Old Home Town and everything is running slower. There are ball games every evening and all day on Saturday. Pizza places seem to be where all the action is right now. Just a lazy, hazy, small town in the summer. The park is very busy and those who were at Denstock can understand why. Dan Nance has made it look so good.

They are all moved into the new building . . . Civic Center . . . and the hospital is looking really good. It amazes me when I see these new buildings. Doesn't seem that long ago that I was reporting that we were going to have them constructed. I know that those who live away were still surprised when they finally saw them. The fountain is very special. Who
would have thought just 8 or 10 years ago that there would be a fountain uptown? In fact, when I started talking about it just 3 or 4 years ago, people would say yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. Well, now everyone can come to see it.

The North Anderson Street Project is postponed until an August start date. There are a lot of small projects connected to this that are being done at this time. I am so anxious for the Anderson Street Project to be completely finished. I have told everyone that it will be done the same as South Anderson Street and I still get disbelief. Believe me, from the south city
limits to the north city limits, Fairground Road, it will look the same. New side walks, lamp posts, trees . . . exactly the same. What an impression this will make on the people who drive up St. Rd. 13 to the lake area.

The Main Street Committee's sub committee, called the Design Committee, is working to see if there is any way we can get the signs to show the designation to the National Register of Historic Places that Elwood now enjoys. We all keep thinking about those from Indianapolis who drive up to the lakes and are anxious for them to see these signs.

We also have a Promotions Committee, on which I also help, and we are wanting to have more publicity out in the state. Elwood sits at the crossroads of 2 good highways, 13 and 28, and Highway 37 goes past the east edge of the town . . . . I'm sure you remember all this, but it is an important factor in the publicity we need to get out . . . . What a draw to
businesses. An improved Town, major new buildings, the highways and National Register Designation. It is hard for me to believe that all of this has come about, and I live here. I can understand why those of you who have not seen it have a hard time with the idea.

Jason Hester, from the Chamber of Commerce, said that the EIDC is talking with a motel chain and a restaurant to go into the south east corner at St. Rd. 37 and 28. I think that will probably go through, and hopefully before the Anderson Street project is finished. What a boon for those who come here for family and school reunions, as well as the various businesses around the city.

Each Megaphone, I think what in the world can I write about this time. But as I start thinking about this very small city, this special Old Home Town of yours, the thoughts of what has happened, what is going on and what is to come overwhelms me. So I write about these things hoping that knowing these things will overwhelm each of you also. This town is being renewed just as those of us on the Den Site are renewed each time we read the messages or write our own for others to read. Some of the things are taking Elwood back in time to days of yore and yet it is becoming a most progressive community. I remember writing in one of the first Megaphones that with such a few on our committees accomplishing so much, can you imagine what would be if the majority of the community worked with us? We always announce the meetings and they do not run very long at all. But best of all is the feeling of PRIDE I feel when I look at what has been done and I can say to all of you . . .

This city IS becoming a place that you will all be very PROUD of, a place you will say, That's my Old Home Town.
