Your Old Home Town

 by Sharon (Benedict) Hurst

There is still a lot going on in this small town of Elwood. The construction on North Anderson Street is still moving along quite well. They are still planning the completion for this fall. Getting pretty close now.

The intersection of South A and 19th Streets have been a problem for quite a long time. Those who live around here have been very much aware of this. The city has recently widened the intersection and are making it a lot more convenient for people who need to turn either 19th Street either way onto South A Street or from either way on South A  Street onto South 19th Street. This intersection is popular because it directly accesses the intersection that has a stop light at East Main and 19th Streets. It is so much more convenient to turn onto Main, either east or west at the stoplight. The community is spending their time and effort to make this a better place for all of us and it is very sad to see a large truck knock down one of the new signs or crumble a curb. All of the problems that occur in this small town are not caused by the people who live here.

We just had the annual Glass Festival. It was a really good one with many vendors; there is not enough room for all who want to come and set up. I worked all 3 days of the Festival and enjoyed it very much. Thursday, all who could helped get the information tent set up and ready to go. I did not stay too late that evening; only there from about 1 - 4. Friday, went out at 9:00 on a rainy morning which just continued to get worse. About 1:00 it was decided to cancel the festival for the day. Those who wanted to stay open could because there was to be a stage show that evening about 7:00. Some of the food vendors chose to stay open.

Friday at 6:30 AM, we started opening the gates to those who had not had a chance to set up the day before or had not moved everything into their tents. From then until 10:30 that evening we were so busy that the time went by in a flash. Many of the vendors told us that was the best day they had experienced in quite a long time. There were so many people we knew and said hello to. Sometimes we would want to have a conversation with someone we hadn't seen in a very long time but would be interrupted with business and when we looked up they had moved on. After all, their time was limited also. Sunday morning we went out about 8:00 because the church service was held and their were several Christian bands and singing groups that morning. The midway opened for sales at noon and an extra hour was added to the closing time to help make up to the vendors for the rain out. All in all, it was an extremely successful Glass Festival. Can't wait until next year.

The Elwood Pipe Creek Historical Society has acquired the old city building and will be marketing it via the Internet over the next 2 years. Indiana Historical Landmarks is assisting  the society with this and we strongly feel that this project will succeed. There is an unusual contract being written, with the help of the Landmarks attorney, and bit by bit I will share this with you as it becomes more appropriate.

There is a Broadband Computer System that is going to be in place very soon. It will follow the I-69 corridor diagonally from sw Madison Co. to the nw corner of the county. This will be a tremendous boon for the computer users here in Madison County. Will talk more on that later also.

It has been quite cool these last few weeks with fairly clear skies, not at all like the last few years. We who live here have really enjoyed it. I hope that all of you have a very special September and a Labor Day weekend filled with fun.

If any of you have a topic you would like to know about, please let me know and I will include the info in the next Megaphone.
