Your Old Home Town

by Sharon (Benedict) Hurst

Elwoodites are moving around very well in this icy and snowy community. It still looks like a tornado has moved through toppling trees at will. There is not one street here that does not have large branches still waiting to be removed.

Here at home we still have a lot of these branches particularly in the back. I am sure that many of the residents are like we are; they have to spend a lot of energy just pulling these branches and limbs out to the street to be picked up. Some of the streets are still packed with ice and snow, but the main roads are clear and that makes it easy to get around once you can get to those roads. We are fortunate that Fairgrounds Road is cleared rapidly because of the schools and that is good for us personally. I would have liked it very much if they had taken the snow and ice from my driveway when they were clearing the main road, but what kind of precedent would that set?

The park has been closed for several weeks. Dan Nance has been on crutches and not able to get out and do his thing. I miss seeing him moving around there working on his many projects and seeing the gate closed is depressing.

The cold weather and ice has slowed down a lot of the construction projects also. I watched them finishing some homes in December, but I guess the construction teams will be slow until spring.

The Historical Society has been marketing the old city building and has several interested developers. This is very good for the town. The Indiana Landmarks Foundation is working very hard with the society to market this building throughout the country, and this is the reason for the building to be noticed by these developers.

Not too much news this month. Everyone is doing their job and pretty much staying put at home when it is this cold. Your Roving Reporter is also staying in as much as possible and is not pulling in as much news to tell you.

All is still well with this small town of Elwood. It is looking so much better each time I do get out and about. During the big ice and snow the new work that has been done on Anderson Street was especially beautiful. I am anxious for the weather to clear and warm up enough for pedestrian traffic again. Those who like walking will understand.

May God keep each of you in the palm of His hand and keep you safe.

My Wintry Garden
written by - Cindy Odom

When I look at my garden,
I see the wild flowers grow,
Although it may be cold outside
and my garden is dressed in snow.

I see red tomatoes of the largest kind
even if the cold wind blows,
I see radishes, onions, lettuce, and beans,
all thriving in their rows.

I see the towering sunflowers
the humming birds love so much.
I give my extraordinary garden,
Just the perfect touch.

And much to my delight,
My garden is hopeful indeed,
While thumbing through the catalog,
Ordering my seed.

Seasons of Love
(A Valentine Poem)
written by - Cindy Odom

When the sun is hot,
The days are long,
I listen to the glorious song
of birds in the trees,
I feel a warm breeze,
I will be with you forever.

When leaves are lying on the ground,
Their color now has turned to brown,
I love to walk
or just sit and talk,
I will be with you forever.

When the wind blows cold,
And snow does fall,
I feel you by my side.
To keep me warm
till Spring unfolds,
I will be with you forever.

When flowers peek up through the ground,
And Spring is in the air,
I know that you are very near,
That you truly care,
You will be with me forever.
