A Tale of a Dog and His Master

This month’s moderators lend a special flavor to the Panther Den for this month we are "introducing" the readers to a moderator who needs no introduction as he has made his own: "AAAARRRRROOOOOWWWWW!" Yes, this month’s moderators are our own Bob "Doggie" Henderson and his faithful (and probably long suffering) Master and wife, Myrna (Reynolds) Henderson.
Bob and Myrna live on Kuhn Lake which is just south of North Webster, Indiana. It is one of the 7 lakes in the Barbee Chain of lakes and is about 90 miles north of Elwood on highway 13.
While they maintain contacts in Elwood with family, church, and friends, they have also made an active life for themselves in North Webster. They are very active in the North Webster Church of God which they attend weekly. Bob attends the Sunday prayer breakfasts and also is a Pastor’s prayer partner one Sunday each month. The couple belongs to a cell group that meets every Monday in different members' homes to discuss the Pastor’s sermon from the Sunday before. This is an active, growing part of their life and Church.
On trips to Elwood, Bob and Myrna attend church at the East Main Street Christian Church. They are often in Elwood to visit Myrna’s mother, June Reynolds Overdorf, and her brother, Larry Reynolds, who is also a Panther Den member. Actually Mrs. Reynolds should be considered a member also as she attends many of our functions. Bob thinks it was Larry who told them about the Panther Den first. Bob’s sister, Neva (Henderson) Goforth, a Panther Den member too, also lives in Elwood. Their 2 children and 4 grandchildren also live in Elwood.
Bob graduated from Wendell Willkie High School in 1953. He also attended John H. Hinds Vocational School and studied computer programming of mills and lathes in 1978 and ’79. While in high school, he did not participate in sports as he didn’t think he "was good enough to compete." However, Bob was student manager for the football, basketball, and track teams from seventh grades through his sophomore year of high school. At this point in time Bob went to work at Hinshaw’s Drug Store so "It was either work or sports. When you need money, you work."
Bob is retired from DePuy Inc., Warsaw, IN where he was employed as a Computer Numerical Controlled machine operator for 10 years. This factory manufactures hip, knee, shoulder, and ankle replacements. Bob worked in the hip section, only quitting when his health forced him into early retirement. He has worked at factories in and around Elwood all his life.
Bob’s interests now are church and fishing. They just bought a new fishing boat and Bob hopes that since Myrna is semi-retired they will get to use it a lot this coming summer.
Bob says that a lot of people ask how I got the name "Doggie." That my friends is a long story and sometime I will tell it to you, but not here, sorry, not enough room." He also declined to comment on just exactly what breed of dog a "Henderson" is.
Myrna is "semi-retired…from Chematics, Inc., a small family owned business that makes diagnostic health tests for checking cholesterol, glucose and alcohol in the body." She now only works there a couple of days a week. Myrna graduated from Wendell Willkie High School with the class of 1956. She was active in the Sunshine Society. Her family owned and operated Reynolds Electric Company.
Myrna mentions several hobbies including collecting picture postcards of all kinds, but especially scenes from towns around the United States. So Dennites, "Don’t throw those cards away. If you don’t want them please save and give to me at a Den gathering in the future. I would be so grateful." Myrna recently has begun to collect angel statues and pins and a few angel dolls. She also enjoys swimming and fishing at the lakes, and entertaining others on a pontoon ride.
Last but certainly not least is Myrna’s most interesting and, perhaps, appropriate hobby, one she has had since childhood: she collects small dog statues! And we always wondered how she came to marry "Doggie" Henderson. Maybe she was just adding to her collection.
Both Bob and Myrna are in agreement about the Panther Den and how many
old friends it has reacquainted them with and how many new friends it has
brought to them. Bob says he can hardly wait each week to see what
new things he can enjoy in the Hall Clock. He thinks "Doc" has done
a wonderful job of putting this together. And Myrna is grateful
to the Den for the love, support and memories that are such a blessing
in their lives.
A Moment in Time
The
Thought Of You
by
Sharon (Woods) Schwartz '55
A new day awakens...
The warmth of sweet sleep...still brushes
And lingers against my skin...
I smile ...that sweet smile...that lovers share.
The thought of you ..makes me feel so alive...
So full of joy and happiness...
Your presence is all around me..
I feel your gentle touch...
I shiver with delight...your kiss so sweet
Awakens the fire within me...
Yet ..we have never met..but it is real...
Pure passion..
How can this be...I am so full of desire..
Love..wanting...a void yet to be fulfilled..
Brought to complete rapture...
The thought of you...makes the sun shine brighter...
The seranade of the birds sweeter...the air
I breath..
more refreshing...
My heart skips a beat...as I hear your voice...
Sensual..loving ..kind ..tender..so caring....
The thought of you makes me feel...and yes...know
...we are two kindred spirits...waiting ..longing
..to meet...
And someday we will...
Our moment in time will come and with it the
giving
Of our hearts to each other...totally...completely...
Forever loved....forever one...
