A Family Thing

by Karen (Stine) Hollies

It was quiet out there. If one were to listen, one could hear the lonely warbling of a bird. The grass was dew touched and the aroma was fresh.

I passed the stones -- and the faces came to mind -- as familiar as the church that we had attended, united in our beliefs. Soon, I reached them and the rose marbled pieces -- and I marveled at how well kept, how pristine was this place.

I read -- as I have often read -- the names and the dates. Memories came flooding back and I fought that heavy wave that brings tears. Instead, I  focused on days long gone and on the reality that age brings a deterioration and infirmity that is not welcome.

Furthest away were his parents, fair-skinned, white-haired, blue-eyed people. Then, it was the two of them -- she, exiting far too young and much needed; and he, after he had made a difficult peace.

Of course they are within me -- and mine -- and  their offspring.

But I had the distinct feeling that this might well be my last visit to this spot. I needed to, once again, familiarize myself with its memory.
