In and Around Your Hometown

by Nancy Sumner

It was a few weeks ago that someone mentioned, ”What is going on in Elwood . . . maybe someone could write an article for the Megaphone.”

Well, I am not much of a reporter but I’ll give it a try. Now thoughts are circling in my mind as to the format, content, and what would others be interested in. Living here we tend to take a lot for granted in common everyday occurrences and don’t realize that they might be newsworthy to someone else. I am a member of 3 community organizations: Elwood Historical Group, Elwood Main Street Association and Elwood Pipecreek Genealogy Society. I live and work in your hometown so bear with me as I begin this reporter’s journey.

The end of January came with a new store on our southern boundary. Dollar General Market opened in what was once called T-Way Plaza. The community came out in force to make day one a huge success! People were lined up outside prior to the 8 a.m. opening! I had to work that Saturday but visited the store after I got off at four. As I was entering the store, a man was outside talking on his cell phone and I heard him say, “This store is great! It will sure give Marsh’s something to worry about!” As I entered, I knew the man was right! It is a beautiful store. It is like a regular Dollar General store but larger, more products and a food market all in one. The prices are great and the quality of items will as the man said, give Marsh something to worry about! Work on the outside of the store continues with a complete remodel of the entire plaza. The future stores will have an all glass front, new awnings and will hopefully be occupied!

There are some new stores in our uptown area! Zenny's Oriental Store is in the same location that was once Edgar Clark's Funeral Parlor. They have been open for several months and specialize in Asian and Latino groceries. Another new store is for the dogs! It is called CJ’s Pet Supply and is located on the northwest corner of Anderson and South A streets. The store takes up two storefronts and is very busy!  Another uptown business is Young’s Country Cottage. They deal in craft and home decorative items. Their location is between Star Bank and Moser’s Jewelry on South Anderson Street. Key West Tanning is located on South A Street across from Wolff’s Restaurant. It is a new steel structure building, I believe, on the same lot once occupied by the Yankee Club and Elwood Y. Two more stores are in the works but not yet completed. A coffee shop is planned just south of the Opera House and a consignment clothing store is coming together in the 100 block of South Anderson Street on the alley. Hopefully this spring we will be able to enter their doors.

Ground has been broken and the foundation has been laid for a new video and tanning store located east of town on State Road 28. I don’t remember the name of the gas station that used to occupy the land but it is on the north side across from Blair Florists. Out near McDonalds at St Rd 28 & 37, there is the Fish-Net Restaurant. It has been open since the fall. If you like Long John Silver’s fish, then you’ll like the Fish-Net!

On a sad note to many of you, as I write this on Feb. 24, it is widely rumored that William’s Sandwich Shop was to serve its last onion burger today. Of course it has had many names through the years, but most still call it William’s or Ceal’s. Owner – management problems with the laws of the State of Indiana seem to be reason for the demise!

As I sit here typing away and bringing you up to speed on your hometown, I realize that I still have much to say!! I think I’ll start on the April Megaphone.

If you have anything you’d like me to look for . . . just let me know! My first day on the job wasn’t too bad! See you next month!
