In and Around Your Hometown

by Nancy Sumner

At the end of last month’s article, I mentioned that there were still plenty of things to tell you and I should start on April’s Megaphone. Well, sorry to say -- that didn’t happen! Now I’m rushing our editor’s deadline with a blank page!! Please accept my apologies for the brevity of this month’s news!

By the time you come home in June for Denstock (June 17 . . . hint - hint), Elwood Plaza should be complete. The new Dollar General Market is booming with business and the re-facing of the store fronts is almost complete. The parking lot is still in the rough pavement stage, but the lighted islands are in and it will just need another surface layer put down.

The new Movie Galaxy store on the east edge of town is coming right along with walls and roof up. It won’t be long until you will be able to stop in and get the latest movie release. The sign isn’t up yet but the building style is identical to other Movie Galaxy’s in the area.

The Elwood Main Street Association is busy planning the Memorial Day parade! The parade will start at the new Elwood Plaza and continue north on Anderson Street to South A Street where it will turn and disband. Following the parade there will be a Memorial service in front of the city building. As a member of the Elwood Main Street Association, I am co-chair of the parade and we are busy planning and sending out invitations to groups to join us in this memorial tradition.

Another item the Elwood Main Street Association is busy working on is the First Annual Elwood Farmer’s Market! We have had two meeting thus far to plan and find interested farmers and home gardeners. The interest has been very encouraging. The Elwood Farmer’s Market will run from the end of June till Labor Day. It will be held around the fountain of the city building. Times for the market will be every Saturday from 8 a.m. to Noon.

The Robert Palmer Institute located in the old city building is coming on strong! The interior is being remodeled with new carpeting, paint and wallpaper. Some temporary walls have been removed to bring the building back to the original design and layout. Patients have been making appointments and class instruction is set to begin this summer. An open house is being planned but no date announced as of yet.

William’s / Ceal’s Sandwich shop is still closed. Another rumor running around is the possible closing of another restaurant and because it is a rumor . . . I hesitate in naming the name or location . . . other than it brings to mind the 3rd Saturday of the month. But you didn’t hear it here!! Rumors, rumors -- William’s came true.

Well, I guess I’ve almost filled a page!! Huh?? I guess I’ll see you next month!
