In and Around Your Hometown
by Nancy Sumner
I might as well confess now, right off the bat, everything I’m about to tell you is from memory! That right there is a scary thing!! All my dates, names & places are at the library. . . and in case you haven’t heard . . . I’m on VACATION!!! My ace reporter kit is locked away, so it looks like you’ll just have to settle for gossip!! And in keeping with the appearance to ‘seem’ professional, according to my Webster’s . . . gossip is defined as ‘chatty talk’! That fits and away we go!
This has been a glorious week in your hometown. Just the right temperature, just the right amount of rain and bright sun. The colors of nature are stunning! I was roaming today and took a couple of pictures you might like. Callaway Park is greening up, flowering trees in bloom and with the warm temps, the swing sets and slides are kept busy! One family was even doing some barbequing! I almost went over for a hot dog! I also noticed Willkie Park on North Anderson street had some neighborhood activity. I don’t remember if you were aware, especially for those who live out of town, when the North Anderson street upgrade was finished last year, Willkie Park received a face lift also! There is now a drive through and spaces for parking so you can get out and enjoy the small shelter with picnic tables. There is also a new walking bridge from the park and across the creek to the ball fields on the other side near the water tower. Today’s picture includes a couple of little boys fishing off the bridge. That brought back memories of me and my grandpa! Can I put a smile in here? ; )
We have a new business in town! Actually it has been here for about 3 months, it’s just that I didn’t know what it was! It is located on the corner of South Anderson and South F streets. It is called New Day Meadery. I never knew what a meadery was until the other day . . . it is a homemade winery . . . right in Elwood! Imagine that!
The Elwood Country Club has had many changes over the course of a couple of years. It is no longer a country club and it is no longer a 9 hole golf course. The country club was sold about 2 yrs ago and it is now called Cattails Golf Course and it is open to the public. There have been a lot of changes to the club house, restaurant and bar area. Cattails has also been able to purchase land across the street to the north for expansion of another 9 holes of golf. In addition, a new housing development is in the works. The forest is gradually being removed and earth moving equipment can be seen with the dust flying! It might not be until next year when the extra course is complete and new homes will be built. It is a great addition to Elwood; however, I do have a concern. Located within the small forest is a small cemetery. For years it has be virtually hidden from sight. The only access was a rough one lane path through a corn field back to the cemetery. Some of the graves are over 100 years old. I have 4th great grandparents buried there from my father’s side. The new corporation says they are going to give special attention to the site but I worry that the upgrades will make it too attractive. Under the guise of progress, some things should remain the same.
William’s, Ceal’s, Hanch’s -- looks like the new name will be Roby’s! Tim Roby and family have purchased our much loved sandwich shop. There has been a lot of activity going on, but no open date has yet to be posted.
Well, that about does it for this edition. I hope my memory hasn’t been too far off!! See you next month! Which reminds me . . . are YOU planning on attending this year's Denstock? Mark your calendars, June 17. Save your money for gas! Hope to visit with you there!
