My View on Heroes

by Savannah Skye Smith

   I thought this might be a good filler to the Megaphone if you should need more. This was written by my 13 year old granddaughter who is living with her cousins. They have legal guardianship of her. I'll let you guess who Grandpa Bag Egg is.

Dewey W. Smith

Hi!
  This is an essay Savannah wrote. Gussie is a character in a book, Ashes of Roses. This book is about the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and immigration through Ellis Island. The essay is comparing how Gussie is a hero to heroes in Savannah's life.

My View on Heroes

  To me a hero is someone who has confidence, who knows what they’re doing is right, and they’re brave. Heroes also do things that would make something important, save people, or do something that would make a difference. They would also offer comfort and they would always be there for you no matter what. Like scientists, they have discovered things and they have done things that make a difference. Heroes have a purpose in life.

  In the book Ashes of Roses, I think that Gussie is a hero because she died to save Rose and she went back through the fire to try and save more people. She is also a hero to me because she was confident and brave. She died knowing that she was doing the right thing.

  My heroes are the people who have helped me and have given me comfort and protection. Like Grandpa Bad Egg, he gave me comfort letting me know that I was living with good people and that they loved me. God is always with me day and night and lets me know that there is nothing that could hurt me.

  Paul and Kari have done something heroic in my life. They helped me and they took me under their protection by giving me a good house and a comfortable bed. They changed my life completely by helping me get to know God, and for that I am grateful.

  I consider them heroes because they were determined to change my attitude and they never gave up. (Paul lost a lot of hair in the process though.) They are very loving and they help me feel loved by giving me things and by just saying that they love me.

  They are all heroes to me because they all have great and positive attitudes, they all know what they’re doing, and most of all they know what their doing is right. They also all show love with their actions, whether it’s saving somebody, helping somebody, giving comfort to somebody, or even creating something that would save people or animals, they are all heroes to me.

Happy Mother's Day

by Shelley (Runyan) Shoup

  Mother's Day is May 14, 2006. Happy Mother's Day to my mom, Sandy Runyan, and all mothers and grandmothers out there in Panther Den land.

M  is for the million things she gave me,
O  means only that she's growing old,
T  is for the tears she shed to save me,
H  is for her heart of purest gold;
E  is for her eyes with love-light shining,
R  means right, and right she'll always be,
      Put them all together, they spell MOTHER

- Howard Johnson (c. 1915)

When you need someone to stand beside you,
Mom is near ...
When you need someone to hear your troubles,
She will hear ...
When you need someone to share your burden,
She will share ...
When you need to know that someone loves you,
Mom is there.

- Thomas J. Langley

A Wonderful Mother

God made a wonderful mother,
A mother who never grows old;
He made her smile of the sunshine,
And He moulded her heart of pure gold;
In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
In her cheeks fair roses you see;
God made a wonderful mother,
And He gave that dear mother to me.
