ALL CLASS REUNION

June 17, 2006

Callaway Park

11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

In and Around Your Hometown

by Nancy Sumner

May has been a pretty quiet month here in your hometown. All the activities that I have told you about in the last 2-3 months are still ongoing. Probably the biggest news has been the opening of Roby’s Grill.

There have been a few local Denites who have mentioned the re-opening and stopping by to see if it is still the “same” as we all knew and loved. After a meeting this past week, a friend and I decided we would try it out also. When you walk in, you start seeing the changes. But these changes didn’t happen over night with a new owner. There have been changes over the years that have gone by without mention. Each of the past owners has made their own nitch in the small place on the curve. Gone is the jukebox and booths with the individual mini-jukeboxes to make your own personal music selection. The original room has become a smaller eating area. The back counter with its 4 or 5 stools is gone. Where one of two booths on the side used to be, there is now an opening guiding the way to a larger dining area. It is nice but seems foreign, like stepping out of one time period into another. There are tables and booths in there, but it also has a very small bar counter at one end and a big screen TV at the other end. The menu has changed some. They still have burgers on the same grill, wonderful coleslaw, fries and onion rings and pie. I ordered a tenderloin. Great!! It was thick and big! Nothing like a hometown tenderloin! But even with all the changes, and the various coats of paint, the smell is still in the bricks!! This wasn’t meant to be a restaurant critique but maybe you’ll stop by when you’re home again. (And Roby’s didn’t pay for this commercial!!)

And talking about coming home again . . . the motley crew you see above just finished having breakfast at Jim Dandy (hint -- third Saturday of each month) and was planning Denstock 2006! In case you have missed the notices, the 7th Annual Denstock will be held on  Saturday, June 17, at the Callaway Park Shelter House. I do hope you are planning on being here! The main menu has been planned: chicken & noodles, mashed potatoes, bake beans and ham plus many other pot luck reunion fare. Meaning – what you also contribute!! Ted and Estel are in charge of the drinks, Bill will have the 50/50 raffle and EmCee duties, Jean and Dottie are overseeing the auction items. Estel will acquire some nice door prizes. Nancy (that’s me!) will get the sound system. There are more job openings available for those who wish to help. Another last minute details meeting will be held on Saturday, June 3 at 4 p.m. in the shelter house. If you would like to help out, please attend. Auction items should be Elwood related. The proceeds from the auction will go to Elwood community projects as the members decide.  We are planning a great time, I hope you can make it!! Those pictured above left to right: Bill Rodgers, Dewey Smith, Ted Pedro, Estel Harney, Jean Rodgers, Nancy Sumner, Dottie Phillippe and Aleda Harney.

One final note to this month’s column: Class reunions!! Here is a recap of the class reunions that we are aware of: 50th Anniversary of Class of ’56 – June 23 & 24; 45th anniversary of Class of ’61 – July 28 – 30th; 40th anniversary of Class of ’66 – August 4 & 5; 25th anniversary of Class of ’81 – July 21 & 22; 20th anniversary of Class of ’86 – July 8. Another reunion is being announced for those who attended Red Corner School. Any alumni who attended Red Corner School are invited to attend on Sept. 23. We will meet at Callaway Park Shelter House from noon to 4 p.m. The old school is gone but its spirit lives! I am on the planning committee if you have any questions -- just drop me an email.

Well, it looks like I’ve rattled on an on again. Wonder what I’ll have to say next month!!
