Yuma Model Railroaders

Yuma (Arizona) seemed void of an active model railroad group. Inquiries did not uncover much information that was useful in any way.
So last October (2005) I wrote to the local newspaper, appropriately named, The Yuma Sun, and invited anyone interested in forming a model railroad group in the Yuma area to either call or e-mail me. Within 48 hours, the responses numbered around 20. We've added several since then.
It was November before we met for the first time and in a second meeting, a decision was made to build an HO portable (2' x 4' sections) layout for our use and public display.
Someone from the group contacted the Yuma Fairgrounds and we were gladly invited
to display the layout the first week of May (2006) at the Yuma County Fair.
There was lots of work to do. And to shorten the story, we spent from a Tuesday
through Sunday displaying the layout and created interest in the hobby and an
invitation to return next year. There will be additional displays in the coming
months and several people have asked to see photos from the fair. Bob Hinshaw
suggested an article and photos for the Megaphone and prompted this
article.
