In and Around Your Hometown

Words can hardly describe how nice the new covered bridge looks that spans Duck Creek at Callaway Park. It is another nice addition to our community park. The following text is from the Elwood Call-Leader on Wednesday, August 16.

Delta Bridge built at Callaway Park
Delta Theta Tau Sorority members have donated the funding for the construction of a covered bridge at Callaway Park. The Delta Bridge was designed and built by Dan Nance, park superintendent, along with a crew from Jim Capps Construction. The project committee included Mary Dunnichay, chairman; Sue Mitroff and Jane Morehead. In celebration of the 100 years of service, sorority members wanted to give a lasting gift of appreciation to the community. Delta Theta Tau is a philanthropic organization. During the past 101 years the chapter has earned and donated monies and equipment to St. Vincent Mercy Hospital, the Elwood Fire and Police Departments, the Elwood Public Library, Elwood Community School Corporation, the Frankton Library, The Elwood Chamber of Commerce and numerous other organizations. Yearly scholarships and awards are given to outstanding students through the Lulu Vantine Health Scholarship, the Anita Waymire Scholarship and the Garnetta Brugger Scholarship. Members of the sorority appreciate the continued support from the community. The Delta Bridge is a token of this appreciation and continued support to the community. |
The article included two photos, one of the new bridge and the other of the sorority members and construction crew. The sorority members included: Jenester Humel, Nancy Ritchie, Sue Mitroff, Mary Dunnichay, Barb Connors, Jane Morehead, Marilyn Brown, Beth Cole, Nelda Semon, Judy Bailey, Bev Austin and Liz Heim. The construction crew included Dale McCord, Jim Hester, Zach Pine, Jerry Werline, Jim Watters, Fred Mort and Dan Nance.

Well, by now most school districts are up and running at full capacity. Your hometown is no different. On August 17, I drove by this group out practicing and giving it everything that they have. Actually this is only one of 3 groups I saw that day. The practice field for these baby Panthers is the Rock Garden between No. 16th & No. 19th north of North F Street. School started here on the 21st. I live on North 19th Street and from past experience it would be wise to stay off that road from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and then later at 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. There are four-way stops along that road all day and night except during those hours when they become "slow & go!!" If you would like to keep up with the activities of the local school district, they have a web site <www.elwood.k12.in.us> that is maintained by some of the students. It is interesting but school has just started again and it is in need of updating.

With all the talk of late about the homegrown Indiana tomatoes and the smell from the canneries that makes your mouth water, I found a new technical web site where you can download various smells. It doesn’t take up much room on your hard drive and it is fascinating to say the least. So I thought that I would give it a try! Unbelievable!
I’ve incorporated the technology into the above picture for you to try also. I usually have my camera with me, because I never know when I can use a particular shot. This one was perfect! I was going to get gas at the Energy Mart and there were 2 tomato trucks and a Red Gold truck! I couldn’t ask for better positioning! I got there just in time as not more than 1 minute the Red Gold truck had filled up and was pulling out. Just in case the download didn’t work in the transfer, the web site is <www.smellaveggie.com>. Enjoy!
Well, that is about it for this month . . . ahh, September! Fall will soon be here!
