Your Calendar Girl ... ; ) Nancy Sumner '66 Elwood Walking, Walking, Walking by Karen (Stine) Hollies
Years ago when we lived in Ohio, I worked at Geauga Community Hospital in Chardon. A group of us ICU nurses would get together from time to time and have a party and do something crazy merely because we had been under a lot of stress at work. One time, we hired a fortune teller who was not to be told what we did for a living, but was to be told that a group of ladies were gathering for a party and wanted their fortunes told. Now I am a cynic, but was totally willing to go along with the idea because it would be fun and different.
It happened that I had a baby sitter and needed to be home by a certain time because it was a school night. So the others told me to be the first to have the lady read my cards. She looked at the cards and began to talk in huge generalities. I was determined not to help her out by revealing a thing about myself. She said it seemed as if I was concerned about my son. (My son? I had no sons!) She mentioned that my daughter would marry someone whose name began with "D." (One married and Edward--Ted, and the other, Keith). She said she could see that I would be moving west. (I came east and south to Virginia). I thought that she was clueless because she seemed to jump around. She said the one thing that she could see clearly is that I would be older and would be "walking, walking, walking".
In all fairness to the fortune teller, she told the others after I had left that she could not get a grip on anything of any substance to tell me. However, she read another's fortune and told her that she would be taking care of a man who had something wrong with him and told her it would be encephalitis. A couple of weeks later, an acutely ill man was admitted and this nurse was given his care. It was almost winter and he was finally diagnosed with something usually unheard of there at that time of year--encephalitis. Remember, she had not been told that we were nurses.
Years passed and I had totally forgotten the fortune teller until something I had either read in the paper or saw on the news jogged my memory. I must give her credit for getting one thing right! I am older and try to stick religiously to my schedule of 3 miles a day, five days a week, "walking, walking, walking."
