It's Been Fifty Years
by Larry Courtney
Carol and I had our first date on November 4, 1955. We celebrated the 50th anniversary of that event. I wrote this poem about it. It may bring back memories for many of you about your first loves. We celebrated our 47th wedding anniversary on August 29, 2006. And many said it would not last!

It's Been Fifty Years
As I start to remember, my thoughts come alive,
Back to my teen years, in nineteen fifty-five,
A junior in high school, and football my game,
No special girlfriend, they all seemed the same.
Believe it or not, I joined the school choir,
It was the last period, it filled up the hour.
I enjoyed the singing, the chorus sure was fun,
And when it was over, the school day was done.
Of course it was co-ed, a reason to smile,
You soon met new members, in just a short while.
But football consumed me, no time for a date,
There’s time after football, to find me a mate.
I met a cute sophomore, a real pretty lass,
So sweet and so tiny, we talked every class.
I wasn’t too sure, if she’d go out with me,
When football was over, I’d ask her and see.
Our friendship continued, week after week,
I had to have courage, no time to be meek.
We soon started meeting, at the school lunch,
I thought she did like me, but not sure how much.
Football now over, it’s time to proceed,
I knew that by now, she did fill the need.
So I asked her to go out, no reason to wait,
Without hesitation, she agreed to a date.
I remember that evening, as if just last night,
We went to a ball game, things really went right.
She was very quiet, with a great sense of humor,
Us being a couple, I hoped not a rumor.
And now to the present, anniversary now here,
On November four, it was fifty years.
It’s been fifty years, since we had our first date,
If it wasn’t to be, IT’S A LITTLE TOO LATE!
