A New Monument in Town!
On Sunday, March 25, a new monument in Elwood was unveiled to a crowd of about sixty people, young and old. This monument was placed on the southwest corner of the YMCA property. A similar monument was erected on part of the Anderson YMCA parking lot this past September. A group of individuals from various church organizations spear-headed the committee in response to the removal of the 10 Commandment from government buildings. Once the Anderson granite tablets were installed, the committee wanted another location and Terry Jones, Director of the Elwood YMCA, offered a portion of its property for the second county monument. The committee hopes to have more commandments placed in other towns in the county.
“We have this Christian heritage in the YMCA and we’re very happy to be part of this project,” Jones said. “This shows that the Elwood community is ready to fight to bring Christian values back into the mainstream.” Roger Gardner, president of the Elwood Ministerial Association, said, “We are so thankful to have this here on our Main Street, so that everyone who drives by will be reminded of these commandments.”
It was also announced that the committee has finalized plans for a third Madison County site, this time in Lapel, for a Ten Commandments monument.

Well, that looks like people swimming!! Could it be?? Really?? Really!! The kids of Elwood are hoping for a very hot summer! So is the Elwood Parks Department! Here is the latest – The following is an excerpt of a letter from Dan Nance to the people of Elwood as published on the elwoodindiana.org web site in February of this year.
I am Dan Nance supt. of parks in Elwood. About the work being done on the pool, Park Board President Fred Mort and myself began working on downsizing and upgrading the pool five years ago. Downsizing for cost effectiveness and upgrading to make it more appealing. We applied for grants because there was not money allocated in the budget to do what needed to be done. We did not qualify for grants so we shut the pool down for two years and encumbered our operating money so we could pay for renovations. When finished the baby pool will be on the same level as the main pool, there will be a zero depth sprinkler area and we are planning on a flume type slide that is 144 feet in length with three revolutions before you hit the water, the height will be 20 feet in height.
I didn’t take any pictures this time but work is progressing! Piles of broken concrete and dirt just lay outside of the pool fencing where is has been removed from the old pool. In the paper recently there was some talk of the cost of the slide and that it might be installed after the pool opens at the end of May. Keep your fingers crossed that 2007 will be the year of the POOL!!
Other activities being planned for the park this year is a summer concert series. Donations and free will offerings will be accepted to help pay for the project.
This is all that is left!
The Cook and Stieglitz buildings uptown are no more. Over the last month or two, I have been telling you of the demolition of the buildings and the process. Even though it saddens me that our uptown character is losing its footing, I am also amazed and fascinated at the daily progression of the demolition. More pictures have been added to the photo album in our Yahoo!Groups site to give you the feeling of a time-lapse photo.
I was able to retrieve the above Stieglitz name plate that once adorned the top of the building and it is now in the hands of the Stieglitz family in Chicago. The name plate was made of tin… probably from the Tin Mill when Louis Stieglitz worked there in the late 1890’s … it measured 8 feet by 20 inches by 4 inches. After 110 plus years, it was in pretty good shape except for rust holes at the bottom of some of the letters.
It looks like more parking will now be available to Ed Jones Investments, House of Kim – Tae Kwon Do, Moser Jewelers, Young’s Country Cottage and across the street H & R Block Co, and the Elwood Chamber of Commerce.
That’s it for this month. I wonder what May will bring… besides May-flowers and Pilgrims!! Arghhh!!! That’s an old one!!!
