Sights and Sounds of Elwood

The Tin Plate whistle at the change of shifts... St. Joseph’s Church bell tolling the Angelus at noon... trees arching over South Anderson Street, in beautiful fall colors... Manghelli’s Fruit Market... the steam engine’s shrill whistle in the night... a town character, Homer Hamilton, singing “Paypa, Sunday paypa!” as he sold his Sunday newspapers or toted a sandwich billboard to advertise local business… the Salvation Army band playing religious hymns downtown on Saturday night... Monday washings flapping on the line... the rattle of bottles from the early morning milk trucks... the smell of a harness shop or a hardware store... Sam Vello standing on a corner in his formal evening attire, spats and top hat (his brother owned a clothing store in Chicago)... gun salutes at the cemetery on Memorial Day, flags flying, bands playing... the smell of the school cloak hall on a winter day... the metallic smell of a chugging train engine… boys playing marbles on their knees in the dirt… snaking through the crowds on the streets and in the stores on Saturday night... the swimming pool covered with humanity, even the island... grabbing chips from the ice wagon... the smell of bread baking at Dietzen’s Bakery and doughnuts at French’s bakery... black-out drills during WWII… the German prison camp located where the high school is now... ice cream trucks with a tinkling bell... ice cream being sold from bicycle carts filled with dry ice… street dancing at a festival... beer cans lining the streets on Willkie Day, and more than 300,000 people in the park… raking and smelling burning leaves in the fall… rolling, diving, and jumping into a tall pile of leaves... the donut shop at the corner of Main and Anderson… going for ice cream at the City Creamery... riding to the A&W root beer stand on the tail of an old Dodge station wagon in our pajamas… family parties at Callaway City Park… playing tennis and basketball at City Park… getting a Tastee Freeze at the root beer stand across from the city pool… fishing and entertaining ourselves endlessly at the creek… the smell of ketchup cooking at Frazier’s and Fettig’s canning factories… hearing the sound of turtle doves in the morning… the firework display at Callaway Park on the 4th of July... the Easter egg hunt on the Saturday before Easter Sunday...
